"Bother burgling and everything to do with it!"

I'm reading The Hobbit for the 10,000th time, because it constitutes a kind of literary comfort food. It makes a wonderful allegory for most any unpleasant adventure one could have, including the medical kind. Here's a bit of dialogue from the book that sounds to me exactly like the kind of advice I always get from doctors:
"Now scuttle off and come back quick if you can. If you can't, hoot twice like a barn-owl and once like a screech-owl, and we will do what we can."

  1. Funny and sad at the same time. I'm sure there are times you feel like a screech owl. As for The Hobbit...haven't read it in years,...maybe it's time. Blessings and prayers for complete recovery.

  2. Funny. Do I dare admit, or say again, that I have never read The Hobbit? Doug read it to the boys probably four times, and I heard bits and pieces of it, but I never seem to be able to commit to "quest" books. I think it is a failing of mine. But I so appreciate the need for comfort books....
